Most 4 and 5 star hotels are located in Funchal (map), where the majority of visitors stay. Funchal is not as hilly as some other locations and offers superb facilities plus a multitude of cafés, restaurants and bars. The marina is located right on the main promenade in the centre of town, with the liners pier directly opposite, just over the harbour waters.
Caniço de Baixo to the east of Funchal is the next most popular area but with a fraction of Funchal's hotels.
In fact, probably 90% of Madeira Hotels and Quintas are to be found in Funchal on the warm south coast where they enjoy more sun and protection from the north easterly trade winds. A quinta is basically a traditional estate manor house that has been refurbished to cater for guests. Many have grown and easily rival hotels for comfort, service and facilities.
For those wishing for a restful, quieter destination where the pace of life is more relaxed, locations like Calheta Beach and Machico (both with imported golden sand beaches) are still within easy hire-car reach of the Island's Capital. Further out west and in an area of its own, Paul do Mar is about as close to nature as civilisation permits with fine surfing and walking opportunities.
Madeira is much longer than it is wide, so whilst it has long north and south coasts, it can't be said to have east or west coasts. Our Madeira maps and Hotel maps illustrate the point. It also has a high spine of mountains running almost its entire length, making for some interesting differences in weather between the two main coasts. Overlooking funchal and the harbour there are many delightful Quintas within easy reach of the town. Heading into the mountains you will find a few quiet hotels, quintas and the odd Villa offering perfect accommodation for levada walkers, where the sheer mountain-scapes and verdant valleys are a trekkers paradise. Be aware though that Madeira's mountains are high and temperatures can be quite chilly, even on the hottest days. Appropriate clothing is recommended in winter; you may see snow on the peaks and on the same day, at sea level in the south coast the sun is shining with a temperature of over 20C. So, bear this in mind when choosing your hotel!
The north coast of the island is virtually unspoilt but offers few hotels, probably due to its rugged nature and relative isolation.
