Câmara de Lobos

Câmara de Lobos a fishing village with its colourful boats is located in the west-central part of Madeira.

Decades ago this was the home of the monk seal (also known as the sea-wolf) and that’s where the name Câmara de Lobos comes from.  Being the main centre for fishing, the black scabbard fish “peixe Espada” (a deep-sea species from Madeira) is caught by local fishermen; it is a traditional fish delicacy in Madeira.

The town is surrounded by vineyards and is known for it’s excellent Madeira Wine as well as being the home of ‘poncha’, a mixture of lemon juice, firewater and honey. The picturesque bay is a favourite with painters, a sight that Sir Winston Churchill painted in the 1950’s.
